Final Four Planning Filled with Excitement and Challenges

1 Apr

Image

It’s official. Conlin Athletic Tours is selling tour packages to the NCAA Final Four as the official tour operator on behalf of the University of Michigan Alumni Association. The Wolverines have not made it this far in 20 years. It was a thrill to watch the clock wind down during Sunday’s game when Michigan beat Florida in Arlington, Texas to advance to the Final Four. We’re so pleased for the team and our Alumni Association clients. We’re headed to Atlanta!

As with all of our successful group travel ventures, the keys to success are careful planning, using only the best suppliers, knowing what works, and what doesn’t. That comes from decades of group travel experience.

The planning for the tour was very detailed by the “Sweet 16” stage, but doing our best not to “black cat the deal”, nothing was announced or promoted until it was official that Michigan was to advance to the Final Four.

The registration websites are live and will close in just days. We’re packing up our staff and getting ready to head south prior to the arrival of several hundred die-hard Michigan fans. See you in Atlanta!

Jackson Pollock Painting

New York City is home to many museums. What museum displays this Jackson Pollock painting? (The first person who guesses correctly in the comments wins a prize.)

CLUE: This NYC museum has roots in Paris, France. It was in 1866 when a small group of Americans decided to bring art and art education to the American people in the form of a national institution.

CLUE: Today, the Museum’s two-million-square-foot building houses over two million objects, tens of thousands of which are on view at any given time.

CLUE: In 1910, this NYC museum was the first public institution in the world to acquire a work of art by one, Henri Matisse.

CLUE: During the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2011, this museum welcomed 5.68 million visitors from around the world to the main building on Fifth Avenue and The Cloisters museum and gardens.

A Rocky Tidal Island and Commune

25 Sep

What is the name of this historical landmark that attracts over 3 million tourists a year?  I’ll have more clues for you starting on Thursday. Good luck!

CLUE: Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, this island was called “monte tombe”. According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches, in 708 and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. Aubert repeatedly ignored the angel’s instruction, until Michael burned a hole in the bishop’s skull with his finger.

CLUE:  Attempting to reach this landmark by any other route than the causeway is dangerous. It is not unheard of for tourists to drown after being cut off by the tide, and the deep mud and quicksand surrounding the island can be treacherous.

REVEAL: Mont Saint Michel, an island just off the coast of the region of Lower Normandy in northern France.

CLUE: This pier attracts over 4 million visitors a year.

CLUE: In the 1930s, the beach was known as “Muscle Beach”. Famous bodybuilders such as Jack LaLanne and Joe Gold (Gold’s Gym) regularly worked out here, establishing this pier/beach area as the birthplace of the physical fitness boom.

Check back for more clues later this week.
